The news about our beloved pastor, Hieromonk Augustine (Lim), continues to be very sobering. Yesterday the diagnosis of lymphoma (Hodgins's disease) was confirmed. He was immediately moved to another hospital, where chemotheraphy began today. However, the cancer is already in the third or fourth stage, owing to the failure to detect the disease early and the blunders of doctors. Moreover, further results are still expected on the precise nature of the disease, without which a precisely calibrated treatment of the disease cannot take place. One fear is that too much chemotheraphy in one so young (30 years) will cause a collapse of his liver. Treatment for possible tuberculosis has been suspended for the time being. The operation on his back, where a malignant tumour has broken a vertebra, has also been postponed for the time being. Efforts are being made for Professor Daniel Katavsky, of Royal Marsden hospital, London, the foremost expert on lymphoma in the UK, to examine the case. However, the proximity of Western Christmas, and the danger of moving Fr. Augustine long distances when his back is broken, make this difficult.
Fr. Augustine is in good spirits, placing all his hope on the Providence of God. Your continued prayers are much appreciated.
with love in Christ,
P.S. Contrary to one report in "Vertograd", Fr. Augustine completely voluntarily, and with the full agreement of his parish, joined the Chrysostomite Synod under Archbishop Chrysostomos, not the Kallinikites, in 2002. He remains a member of it to this day.
